Crunch time

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

I know it’s been a while since I’ve put up a full length entry here. I’ve started using a WordPress plugin to put my Twitter updates on my blog to inject some much needed life into it between full-length entries like this one. It’s a little buggy, though, because my tweets for one day end up being dated the following day in my blog…oops.

Economic news has gotten a lot of people concerned. Bailout, economic stimulus, and credit crunch have become household words, and 401(k)s has since become more like 200.5(k)s.

Right now I’m facing a bit of a cash crunch myself, some of it self-inflicted. I wouldn’t call it a crisis, but I ended up with a double whammy, having coming back from my Oregon vacation in late August to end up having to change the tires and brakes on my car, nearly simultaneously, in early September. I normally pay off my credit cards in full every month so my savings account took a big hit in October. Then, just as things seemed to turn around, my computer was fine one day around Thanksgiving and wouldn’t even power on the next. A power supply swap didn’t help. That was another bullet-biting moment as I was forced to get a new computer. This will no doubt lead to another major pocketbook hit next month. (Fortunately the old hard drive was OK and I still have all my data, pictures, music, and whatnot.)

Fortunately, I still have my job and for the foreseeable future it’s pretty safe. I’m hoping my usually sizable tax refund next year will help replenish some of my stores after the turn of the year.

Here’s hoping things will get better…

  • Doing as much as I can today on the computer before going out. Working packet pickup for 5K, worship team practice, party at Pearl City HS. #
  • Last I remember these two teams met…it wasn’t pretty. Has anyone noticed any increase in “extracurriculars”? #
  • Oh well. Cincinnati gets its BCS bowl, Hawaii gets its Hawaii Bowl, and no brawl. Would have loved a win here, but that’s OK. #

  • Was able to get my hard drive out of the old computer but the enclosure I got is the wrong one (needed SATA). Need to go back and xchg it. #
  • Went to Best Buy Aiea and got things straightened out. Will try putting it together when I get home…hoping it works. #
  • Cool! The hard drive from my old computer still works! Gonna try and copy the data over. #

  • To paraphrase Groucho Marx: Hello, I must be going. #
  • In about an hour, I’ll head down to Best Buy and do my part to stimulate the retail economy (not entirely by choice, of course…). #
  • Came home empty-handed, but saw my prime candidate at Aiea Best Buy. Maybe tomorrow I’ll pick it up. #
  • Ham radio net done. Hearing a lot of new callsigns lately. Now going out for a short run around the lake. #
  • Having a hard time keeping eyes open. Time for bed. G’night. #
